Rita Carrey, the older sister of renowned actor and comedian Jim Carrey, has died at the age of 61. Her husband, Alex, announced her peaceful passing on November 14, 2024, surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Canada, Rita was one of four siblings, including Jim, John, and Patricia. She carved her own path in the entertainment industry as a radio host and public speaker, and also led the Rita Carrey Band, a classic rock group. Her former radio co-host, Brian Salmon, remembered her as a “tremendously generous person” who often used her Hollywood connections for charitable causes.

Rita and Alex shared a 16-year relationship, culminating in a wedding in July 2023. Alex described her as his “bestest friend, my lover, and my beautiful wife,” highlighting their shared travels and her unwavering desire to help others, even strangers. He noted her passion for Christmas, which she celebrated daily, and her initiative in starting a fundraiser for a local charity.

To honor Rita’s memory, a candlelight vigil is scheduled for December 7, 2024, on Heathcote Terrace in St. Catharines. Participants are invited to join the “Christmas on the Terrace” event, which supports the local charity Gillian’s Place, after the vigil. Donations in Rita’s name can be made directly to Gillian’s Place or at the event, with contributions of non-perishable food, children’s clothing, toiletries, or unwrapped children’s presents being particularly appreciated.

Rita Carrey’s life was marked by her dedication to family, her contributions to the arts, and her commitment to charitable endeavors. Her legacy serves as a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on their community through kindness and generosity.
